Health goals can be part of appraisal cycle
health insurance coverage for their employees to include extended benefits for household help, parents and parents-in-law, and are encouraging employees to set aside 10% of their annual objectives towards health goals, which in turn will impact their variable pay and bonus. The move is designed to ensure that health benefits are not just a ‘feel-good’ mechanism but are also designed to help curb employee attrition and measure performance.

Small businesses grapple with global tech outages created by CrowdStrike
software update that caused technological havoc worldwide on Friday, and its repercussions continued through the weekend. The breadth of the outages highlighted the fragility of a digitized world dependent on a few providers for key computing services. But the problem appeared to divide those affected into haves and have-nots. Major customers of Microsoft and CrowdStrike are getting IT support to resolve the issues, but many smaller businesses whose Windows PCs may have received the problematic update are still struggling. Take Tsvetta Kaleynska, owner and founder of the Manhattan-based consumer insights company RILA Global Consulting, which has Fortune 500 clients. As of Saturday, she resolved the payroll issue and she got an extension until Monday on the research project. But the prospective client will not move forward with the new contract, cutting her annual earnings by nearly 25%, she estimated. The problem: she couldn't sign the contract because Docusign, which runs on Microsoft software affected by the faulty update, was down.

Burden of lung diseases in India likely much higher than Lancet study's projection: Doctors
Lancet study, due to high levels of air pollution and tobacco consumption. According to the study published in May, ischaemic heart disease will continue to be the leading cause of death around the world, followed by stroke, diabetes and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). In ischaemic heart disease, narrowing of vessels in the organ reduces blood flow. The study projected that men and women around the world could live longer by up to five and four years, respectively. «It is going to remain the number one killer and disabling disease with continued bad lifestyle and increasing stress. Yet, there is a lack of understanding of the exact mechanism of formation of these blockages (in the heart's blood vessels). Till we understand the mechanism, the solutions cannot be found,» said Dr Atul Mathur, Executive Director, Interventional Cardiology and Chief of Cath Lab, Fortis Escorts Heart Institute, New Delhi.

This week's violence has killed at least 123 people so far, according to a count of victims reported by police and hospitals, and poses a monumental challenge to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's autocratic government after 15 years in office. Microsoft's CrowdStrike leaves business black and blue in India
Microsoft software, prominently used by enterprise networks worldwide. CrowdStrike, a US-based endpoint security provider to several global organisations including Microsoft, first released an update to its product — Falcon Sensor — on July 9 gradually rolling it out to companies globally over the next 10 days. On July 18 and 19, the update — intended to pre-emptively detect cybersecurity breaches — was pushed onto Microsoft devices unwittingly, triggering widespread chaos. It forced several banks, hospitals, airlines, and startups to resort to manual processes to continue operations, industry executives said. «Around 300 flights have been cancelled, including around 200 for market leader Indigo alone till 6 pm (on Friday),» people aware of the details told ET.
