The tension stems from both men's overwhelming need for attention. Swisher noted that Elon Musk needs a lot of attention and Trump would be irritated by that. She also compared Musk's petulance to that of Trump, saying, that she does not think Trump’s going to like the attention that Elon is going to grab for himself.

Swisher's analysis was echoed by CNN host Chris Wallace, who reflected on similar tensions during Trump’s first term, citing how former strategist Steve Bannon’s rise to prominence caused unease within the administration. “I remember thinking, ‘The boss is not gonna like that,’” Wallace recalled, referring to Bannon’s Time magazine cover in 2017.
Musk’s influence has raised speculation that he could be given a prominent role in Trump’s administration. However, Swisher suggested that Musk's tendency to dominate discussions might alienate Trump. “Musk will be exerting as much influence as possible,” she said, but warned that Trump could soon push back if Musk grabs too much of the limelight, similar to how Bannon was sidelined after becoming a media figure.
