Jason Mraz has candidly shared his journey towards self-acceptance since publicly coming out as a member of the LGBTQ+ community in 2018.
In an interview with GLAAD, the 46-year-old artist discussed the challenges and emotional complexities he faced while embracing his identity.
Mraz, who was recently named to Out100, Out magazine’s compilation of influential LGBTQ+ people, emphasized the importance of healing past relationships while moving forward in his journey.
Reflecting on his time on Dancing With the Stars, he expressed that the dance routines, particularly his dance-filled music video for «I Feel Like Dancing,» served as a metaphor for life. The singer shared, «Dance is an amazing medium for that transformation and for that accepting of one's self.»
Mraz, who married Christina Carano in 2015 and divorced in June, acknowledged the challenges of self-acceptance and the need to navigate relationships from his past.
He stated, «You want to heal as many relationships of the past as possible and at the same time, step into this new acceptance and new identity or whatever I’m claiming, and that’s also hard.»
Currently competing on season 32 of Dancing With the Stars alongside partner Daniella Karagach, Mraz expressed the unexpected emotional depth of the experience. He noted the journey of moving through discomfort to ultimately feeling accomplished and happy to be himself.
Jason Mraz released his latest album, «Mystical Magical Rhythmical Radical Ride,» in June, capturing a period in his life marked by personal challenges, including the death of his stepfather and his mother's cancer diagnosis.
