Justice Dhananjaya Yeshwant Chandrachud, often known as DYC in the legal world, has had a distinguished career that has left a lasting mark on India's judiciary. Known for his progressive ideas, dedication to justice, and compassion, Chandrachud’s journey has been both influential and inspiring.
Born on November 11, 1959, into a respected legal family, Dhananjaya was the only child of Y.V. Chandrachud, who served as India’s longest-tenured Chief Justice. His mother, Prabha, was a classical musician for All India Radio. Chandrachud's academic journey began in top Indian schools, including Cathedral and John Connon School in Mumbai and St. Columba's School in Delhi. His pursuit of law started at Delhi University, where he earned a Bachelor’s in Law, followed by an impressive stint at Harvard Law School, where he earned both an LLM and a Doctorate in Juridical Sciences.
Chandrachud began his legal practice at the Bombay High Court and even spent time at the prestigious law firm Sullivan & Cromwell in New York. His career took a pivotal turn in 2000 when he was appointed as a judge in the Bombay High Court. He rose to become Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court in 2013 and, by 2016, was appointed to the Supreme Court. In 2022, he became the 50th Chief Justice of India.
