Disease X is spreading in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This flu-like disease has caused significant concern due to its high infection and death rates. The World Health Organization (WHO) is working to understand and contain the outbreak.
Since October, Disease X has affected an estimated 406 individuals in the DRC. The illness has claimed 143 lives, most of them children. Local health authorities are providing these figures, highlighting the severity of the situation.
The outbreak's epicenter is located in a remote area of Kwango province. Poor road conditions and heavy rain are making it difficult for health teams to reach the affected communities. The journey to the outbreak’s center can take up to two days.

Severe malnutrition in patients is hindering efforts to identify the disease’s source. Many of the most critical cases involve individuals already suffering from malnutrition, complicating the diagnosis process. The WHO has stated that limited diagnostic resources in the region are delaying progress.
