Myanmar has caused discomfort for Northeastern insurgent outfits taking shelter there. There is pressure on them to participate in the conflict or be out of the area. Several militants’ outfits of Northeast India have bases in Myanmar.
Recently, the oldest Meitei insurgent groups from Manipur United National Liberation Front (UNLF) signed a peace accord with the Centre and the Manipur government. The outfit had its bases in Myanmar.
Sources in the intelligence agencies who do not want to be named told ET, “Militant outfits including United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) operate from Taga inside Myanmar. In Sagaing region of Myanmar recently clashes have intensified between the military Junta forces and the pro-democracy supporters.”
Sources added, “There is pressure on the ultras to assist the either sides in their fight.
This is causing discomfort to the rebels whose safe hideouts are no longer safe. Outfits like Peoples’ Liberation Army, The Peoples’ Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK) the Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP), the Kanglei Yaol Kanba Lup (KYKL), the Coordination Committee (CorCom) and the Alliance for Socialist Unity Kangleipak (ASUK) have their bases in Myanmar. Nationalist Socialist Council of Nagalim (Khaplang) had its bases in Myanmar.”
In 2021, Myanmar army handed over five militants of banned Revolutionary People’s Front (RPF).
