In India, however, podcasts tell a very different story. According to Spotify’s Culture Next report, mythology/spirituality was the most popular genre amongst Gen-Z listeners, witnessing an incredible 236 per cent year-on-year growth. In comparison, true crime only saw a 97 per cent increase – marking the second lowest year-on-year growth; only sports (47 per cent) ranked lower.
Asked why, Spotify India points to how well the medium aligns with Gen-Z’s passion for learning. “Podcasts serve as catalysts for learning for Gen Z, who enjoy sharing knowledge acquired from this medium and engage in conversations to dissect the insights. Over 80 per cent of Gen Z acknowledge that podcasts provide in-depth exploration of various subjects, bringing them to the heart of the matter,” said Dhruvank Vaidya – Head of podcasts at Spotify India.
But why does mythology/spirituality rank the highest? Vaidya says, “Mythology podcasts flourish due to their adaptability on audio-first platforms, seamlessly integrating spiritual wisdom into daily life.”
“Podcasts have emerged as a haven for Gen Z, serving not only as a source of entertainment but also as a platform for education and cultural exploration. Hungry for perspective, Gen Z seeks depth and insight from the diverse podcast hosts who provide a discourse that resonates with them,” adds Arjun Kolady, Head of Sales – Spotify India.
That is not to say that Indian Gen-Zs don’t have a passion for true crime.
