Waters Food Fishing beautiful pop aquatics Makhana and machli are a deadly combo: Why fish farming is complementary with growing fox nuts
Pag pag pokhari maach makhan, saras boli muski mukh paan” is a Maithili saying that describes how the land has ponds at almost every step full of fish and the prickly water plants that produce makhana, whose popped seeds are becoming big business. In Greek mythology, Euryale was a Gorgon, a beautiful woman with monstrous features like the snakes for hair of her better-known sister Medusa. When a British botanist came across what looked like a beautiful water lily with menacing spikes on its stalks and leaves, he invoked the Gorgon in its scientific name, adding ferox, or ferocious, for emphasis. Euryale ferox seeds are sometimes called Gorgon nuts. The name was appropriate for another reason. Euryale means ‘far-roaming’ and the prickly plants grow across much of eastern Asia, probably distributed by migratory waterfowl. In 'Soup for the Qan', a translation of a 14th century CE dietary manual for China’s Mongol Emperor, many dishes are made with Euryale seed flour. These are clearly distinguished from the seeds of that other aquatic plant, the lotus, but in time this distinction became blurred. Makhana is often called lotus seed but in Chinese cuisine, actual lotus seeds are now more popular.

Citi Action Sustainability Dreams President Winter Olympics Olympics athletics Ahead of IOC election, 350 Olympians urge candidates to make climate action top priority
Saina Nehwal and PR Sreejesh, have written a letter to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) presidential candidates, urging them to make climate action their top priority. As IOC members gather in Costa Navarino, Greece, to vote on the seven candidates next week (March 18-21), the Olympians called for stronger commitments from the IOC to cut carbon emissions, promote sustainability in host cities, set clear guidelines on polluting sponsors and use its platform to advocate for climate action. Climate impacts are «no longer a distant threat, but a current and growing harm to the sports we love and to the countries that make up our Olympic family», the letter said. The signatories include 57 Olympic champions and over 100 Olympic flag bearers. They represent some of the world's most climate-vulnerable nations, including Argentina, Aruba, the Bahamas, Cabo Verde, Colombia, Cook Islands, Eswatini, Fiji, Ghana, India, Kenya, Laos, the Marshall Islands, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, Peru, Sierra Leone and Zambia. Recognizing that extreme weather events are already disrupting the Summer and Winter Olympics and affecting athlete performance and safety, the letter urges decisive action to ensure the games remain accessible and safe for future generations. Earlier this year, massive wildfires burned large areas of Los Angeles, the host city of the 2028 Olympic Games. The fires killed about 30 people, destroyed thousands of buildings, and forced tens of thousands to flee their homes.

Natasa Stankovic recently turned to Instagram to upload a lively and heartwarming clip featuring a delightful dance session with her young son, Agastya. The affectionate mother-son pair swayed to the rhythm of a vibrant melody inside what appeared to be Agastya’s personal space. Dressed in an elegant black coordinated outfit, Natasa showcased her enthusiasm as she grooved to the beat with infectious energy. She selected the classic anthem ‘I Will Survive’ by Gloria Gaynor as their soundtrack, passionately singing along at moments, particularly emphasizing the lyrics, “I've got my life to live.” During the powerful chorus, where the words “I will survive” played, she reinforced the message of resilience through her expressive movements. Agastya, brimming with excitement, eagerly followed his mother’s lead, hopping and twirling beside her with joy. Accompanying the post, Natasa penned a meaningful caption: «Teach your kids to dance through life #bepresentinthemoment.» This heartening video surfaced amidst growing speculation surrounding cricketer Hardik Pandya and British singer as well as television personality Jasmin Walia. Rumors of their alleged romance gained momentum after Jasmin was sighted at the Champions Trophy 2025 final held at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. Her presence at the high-profile match further intensified whispers of a possible relationship, especially since she and Hardik had shared strikingly similar vacation snapshots from Mykonos, Greece, during the same period.
