Desai’s journey began in 1976 when he moved from India to the United States after completing his studies in electrical engineering at IIT Bombay. His first role was as a programmer with TCS, where he met his future wife, Neerja Sethi. Sharing a mutual interest in creating their own enterprise, the couple took a bold step in 1980, founding their IT consulting and outsourcing firm, Syntel, from their small apartment in Troy, Michigan, with an initial investment of just $2,000 (around Rs 1.65 lakh).
The early days of Syntel were challenging, with the company generating only $30,000 in revenue during its first year.
