For nearly eight months, the man, reportedly seeking to improve his health and lose weight, adhered to a diet composed almost entirely of cheese, butter, and hamburgers, consuming up to 6 to 9 pounds of cheese and several sticks of butter daily. His inspiration? Online advice that promised health improvements. But as his body turned against him, his extreme regimen led to the buildup of cholesterol so severe that it began manifesting in unsightly yellowish nodules on his palms, elbows, and feet.
Dr. Konstantinos Marmagkiolis, an interventional cardiologist at Tampa General Hospital, who treated the man, was stunned by the severity of the case. «This was an extreme example of how a high-fat, meat-heavy diet can have severe consequences on cholesterol levels,» Marmagkiolis said.
