A. I am interested in the inter-section between business strategies, markets and environmental issues. Most recently, I have been examining the state of business education and how it needs to adapt to 21st century challenges, such as climate change and income inequality.
Q. Were there pivotal moments when American consumers’ concerns about nature influenced corporates?
A. This happened differently across diverse segments. Growth in the electric vehicle (EV) sector started with the emergence of Tesla — consumers were worried about greenhouse gases earlier as well but EV offerings weren’t very strong. Then, Tesla excited people — that exploded the market and forced all major automakers to chase Tesla. In other areas, whether green hotels or sustainable foods, change has come from a combination of growing aware-ness about ecological problems and the availability of offerings — consider how increased information about the agri-cultural sector was met with options like Whole Foods, farmers’ markets, etc.
Q. Have consumers also applied pres-sure strategies to nudge corporates towards sustainability?
A. When consumers care about an issue, it becomes about market demand — and companies know how to respond to that. So, if consumers want green cleaners, for instance, firms are glad to provide those. Other pressures
