If the early leads hold, and the BJP successfully breaks into AAP's stronghold, Delhi will become the latest among a few opposition-ruled states to turn saffron. This would further solidify the BJP's position in the region, strengthening the ruling party at the Centre.
The BJP is already in power in the states surrounding the national capital, including Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan. The party has made significant inroads across India, holding power in states like Haryana, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, and Andhra Pradesh.
Although the BJP has ruled Uttar Pradesh since 2017, it also managed a decisive victory in Haryana last year, despite challenges, and wrested power from the Congress in Rajasthan in 2023.
Despite governing in at least 20 states and a Union Territory, the BJP has long resented being out of power in Delhi since 1998. This frustration was compounded by its disappointing losses in the national capital in 2015 and 2020, where it only won three and eight of the 70 seats, respectively, while the AAP dominated with 67 and 62 seats.
